Integrative Medicine aims to encourage optimal health and wellbeing. An Integrative Doctor offers more time, more attention and a broader approach to healing. The approach is not based solely on the Western biomedical model but also draws from other alternative models.
Typically Integrative Doctors have general training in a variety of alternative health modalities to help them understand and work together with other practitioners. Occasionally they will specialise in a specific alternative modality with advanced training. This enables them to work effectively with other practitioners as an overseeing health guardian to ensure the optimal health and wellbeing of their patients.
- Patient and practitioners are partners in the healing process.
- The patient is seen holistically. Factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are taken into consideration, including mind, spirit, and community, as well as the body.
- Appropriate use of conventional and complementary methods.
- Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive should be used whenever possible.
- Integrative medicine utilises evidence-based practice and neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically.
- Prevention of illness is the greatest asset to good health.
