Counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty or distress, general dissatisfaction, or a loss of direction and purpose. Counselling can only take place at the request of the client.
The counsellor attempts to perceive the difficulties from the client's point of view by listening attentively and patiently. Through this process, the client can begin to see things more clearly. Counselling does not involve advising or directing a client to make a particular decision. In fact, a non-judgemental attitude is essential for an effective outcome in therapy.
In a counselling session, a client may explore multiple aspects of their life and feelings in an open and unrestricted way. Sometimes intense feelings can be expressed, offering the opportunity to experience and process these feelings in a healthy way. Counsellors are trained to be able to accept and reflect the client's problems without becoming affected by them to the detriment of the client.
The counsellor offers respect and acceptance towards the client, supporting the development of trust in the relationship. Together they may be able to explore the client's life with depth and with honesty. The counsellor can help the client to examine thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that are troublesome or distressing, and together they can search for areas of resilience and potential areas where change is possible.
